A verified finding in a background check report where the candidate's claimed information does not match what was independently confirmed.
A discrepancy is a verified mismatch between the information provided by a candidate and the information independently confirmed through background verification. Discrepancies can range from minor (a 1-month difference in employment end date due to different counting methods) to major (a completely fake employer or degree from a non-existent institution).
Verification agencies categorise discrepancies by severity — typically as Minor, Major, or Critical. Minor discrepancies may not affect the hiring decision. Major and Critical discrepancies generally trigger the adverse action process and may result in offer withdrawal.
A discrepancy report documents the specific finding, the source of the confirmed information (e.g., the university's registrar office, the employer's HR department), and the nature of the mismatch.
