Discrepancy Report

A verified finding in a background check report where the candidate's claimed information does not match what was independently confirmed.

A discrepancy is a verified mismatch between the information provided by a candidate and the information independently confirmed through background verification. Discrepancies can range from minor (a 1-month difference in employment end date due to different counting methods) to major (a completely fake employer or degree from a non-existent institution).

Verification agencies categorise discrepancies by severity — typically as Minor, Major, or Critical. Minor discrepancies may not affect the hiring decision. Major and Critical discrepancies generally trigger the adverse action process and may result in offer withdrawal.

A discrepancy report documents the specific finding, the source of the confirmed information (e.g., the university's registrar office, the employer's HR department), and the nature of the mismatch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Minor discrepancies — such as a 1–2 month difference in employment tenure, or a different date format used for a graduation year — are often explainable and may not affect the hiring decision. HR teams should always give the candidate an opportunity to explain before making a final decision. Major discrepancies (fake employer, criminal concealment) are a different matter entirely.
